Ancient Greece

1.  Greece is located in Europe

2.  Greek civilization began more than 3,000 years ago.

3.  It still covers as much land today.

4.  It is a peninsula of steep mountains and valleys in the Mediterranian Sea.

The Greeks began education and schools thousands of year ago. Children started school from the age of six. They received thorough training. The Greeks made advances in poetry, music, philosophy, sports, and science. You name it, they taught it.

Spartans were mighty warriors who showed no mercy whatsoever.  In 431 BCE, Athens and Sparta began a 30 year war to sort out their differences.  In 405 BCE, Sparta launched a suprise attack and captured the Athenian navy.  Athens was forced to surrender and tear down its walls.  Sparta was so weakened by the long war that it lost to the Thebes in 371 BCE.
