Through the development of the Medical Academy at Wakulla High School, students can combine biomedical technology and the human touch to learn about diverse aspects of healthcare that they may never have dreamed of. The focus of Wakulla High School's Medical Academy is to integrate academic rigor with career and technical education.
While some students may choose a traditional pathway to become a nurse or doctor, other students will be able to choose a pathway that leads to biomedical manufacturing and research into diagnostic and laboratory technology. Students can begin to develop the skills necessary to pursue careers in biomedical technology as early as ninth grade, and complete their high school years with on-the-job experiences that expose them to the extensive career prospects in this area.
Students are offered a variety of hands-on learning opportunities through the integration of core academics, relevant health care topics, field trips, job shadowing, clinical rotations at local hospital, volunteer programs and community health activities in many different areas of the health care industry. Currently, completion of this program provides students the opportunity to receive CPR, First Responder, HIPPA and Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.) certification.
Students must apply for admission to the Health Science courses. These courses are Health Science I, Health Science & Careers II and Nursing Assistant III.
