Programs

Wakulla County Schools offers several different Prekindergarten programs depending on the child or family's eligibility.

Exceptional Student Education (ESE) program offers services for children from birth to five years old. In order to qualify for this program, the child must show a significant delay in any area of development (Cognitive, Social/Emotional, Motor, Adaptive or Communication) including speech. In order to qualify for the ESE Program, the following process must take place:

    • Screening services are provided to assist in the identification of children who have concerns for speech/language or developmental delays.  Screenings may include data gathering, record review as well as formal and informal screening procedures such as vision, hearing and parent interview.
    • Evaluation services provide a formal examination of all areas of development including speech.  The evaluation is used to determine eligiblity for the ESE program.
    • An Eligibilty meeting will occur once the evaluation report is received.  Families are given a copy of the child's evaluation and it is reviewed.  If the team determines that the child is eligible for services, an Individual Education Plan (IEP) will be written, which will consist of goals that the family and teacher agree best meet the needs of the child.

Headstart is a federally funded program located at Wakulla Educational Center and Sopchoppy Education Centers. Ten percent of children in Headstart may be over the income eligibility.

Voluntary PreKindergarten (VPK) is a state funded program for any child age four who is eligible for kindergarten the following school year. VPK is offered at Wakulla Education Center during the school year and the summer.

Students entering Prekindergarten in the Wakulla County for the first time must meet the income guidelines through Headstart, VPK Requirments and/or disability eligibility.
